Into The Blue - The Symbolism of Using The Colour Blue

It's no doubt that the most popular favourite colour is blue. It's one of our most abundant colours in nature. From the sky to the waters we are surrounded by blue imagery. There are several uses for using the colour blue in advertising.

Nature
As mentioned blue is abundantly found in nature. For this reason it has importance for symbolizing water. It also have associations with purity and cleanliness. Living things are dependent on water which in turn makes the colour blue important. 

Mood
Blue is associated with sadness or melancholy. So it's often used in advertising to depict this. Blue can also be used as a neutral mood or made happy by having it in a light shade. Blue can also be contrasted with it's complementary colour yellow for added effect.

Luxury
Historically blue was a luxury colour only affordable to the rich or important people. The reason was that the blue dye was from a plant in a far off country. If you could afford it you placed a order and maybe received it a few months. In paintings important historical figures were depicted in blue.
