When To Use Iconic Poses In Your Ads

Since advertising began, there have been special instances where an iconic pose was created. These are usually with advertisements that have been endorsed by celebrities. Others were created with a model and the pose helped create brand recognition. Iconic poses can even be created for album covers.

Some recognizable iconic poses are from Marilyn Monroe. The iconic photo of her in a white sundress pushing down her skirt as wind goes underneath, has been recreated many times. Wonder woman's defensive stance with her arms in an X, has been a symbol for feminism and girl power.

Another iconic pose was created to recruit women to the work force. During the world wars jobs needed to be filled by the available population. The recruitment poster show cased a woman in a jumpsuit, bandanna and posing "pumping iron". The caption simply said: "We can do it!".

In advertising many agencies choose to recreate famous poses. It helps increase brand recognition and utilizes the associations already linked to the pose. Other "stock" poses are more general and relate to body language that is already encoded in our DNA. Other poses are simply taught in modeling schools.
